People I Envy Err, Respect – Donald Glover

Donald Glover

There are people think are cool, or talented or whose work we enjoy. But sometimes there are people who go so far beyond this that they form their own, exclusive category. This is the first of a number of articles about such people.

This first article is about Donald Glover.

Perhaps best known as an actor for his performance as Troy in the utterly genius and utterly overlooked TV comedy Community. So already, he is an actor in one of the best sitcoms of all time. But that isn’t enough, oh no.

He also had a number of cameo appearances on that piece of sitcom genius 30 Rock. How come? Oh, he was one of the writers. From 2006 to 2009, part of the writing team that won three consecutive Writers Guild of America Awards. Then he quite to make his own way. How ballsy is that?

Oh, just to add insult to injury in 2006 when he started writing for 30 Rock he was just 23! This was after graduating from the Tisch School of the Arts.

Well, that’s pretty impressive isn’t it?

Yep. But not enough to make this series.

He is also part of the sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy who developed a large YouTube following even before he became known as an actor. Their 2006 YouTube video Bro Rape has over 9 million views. In 2009 they finally managed to release their debut feature film, Mystery Team, which Glover co-wrote and starred in. This premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

The following year his stand-up special aired on Comedy Central. In 2011 he film another hour special for them.

So writer, actor, feature films, TV, internet, stand-up. How about music? Oh, he does that too.

Under the moniker Childish Gambino, he has released a whole host of albums, mixtapes, EPs and singles for free online. In 2011 his first physical release came out on Glassnote Records. So he’s a rapper. Yes. He also produces his own music, though on the 2012 mixtape Royalty, he collaborated with artists including RZA, Ghostface Killah and of all people, Beck.

That brings us pretty much up to date, though he is in talks to produce a show based broadly on his life as well as continuing to do all of the above.

There is no denying that is a healthy back catalogue of work, but for someone who is only 29?!

That is ridiculous.

His versatility into so many different fields, as well as his relentless productivity are just amazing and why has been chosen for this article.

Absolutely outstanding. Oh, he also got Tina Fey to rap on one of his tracks. That’s worthy of inclusion enough.
