This is a slightly different film from the ones I normally recommend on a Saturday.
Lars and the Real Girl stars Ryan Gosling as Lars, a kind-hearted recluse who lives in his brother’s garage. One day, after overhearing something at work he orders a anatomically correct sex doll, named Bianca, from the internet and starts a real relationship with it. And I mean a real relationship, he takes her to church and on holiday and all sorts. It’s a bit of a bizarre film, but it is heartbreakingly sweet and funny.
Through Bianca he reconnects with his family and the outside world as people begin to embrace her and him.
There is a great performance from Ryan Gosling a few years before he became a superstar with Drive. Emily Mortimer and Paul Schneider put in great performances as the sister-in-law and brother, but it is Gosling and Bianca who steal the show.
This is warm and funny and sad and despite the unconventional storyline, a very familiar film.
