Smiley Face is a stoner comedy film. For some, that might be all you need to know whether or not you’ll watch it. But let’s go a little bit deeper.
Unlike most stoner films, this does not involve a couple of guys going round and getting high, or sitting round the house thinking of stupid things to do. In fact, this film features no men getting stoned at all, which is probably a first in the history of cinema.
The only person who gets high in the whole film is Jane F., played by Anna Faris. Playing the stereotypically unsuccessful layabout computer game playing stoner, she predictably, gets the munchies. She then proceeds to eat a whole bunch of cupcakes. IT then quickly becomes apparent that they were filled with copious amounts of marijuana. The rest of the film is then spent following her around in her weed-filled little head, trying to do things it would take a sober person about 20 minutes to accomplish.
There are a host of cameo appearances from a number of actors. Adam Brody (of The O.C. fame) is a particular highlight as the out of patience, dreadlocked weed dealer. Jane Lynch (Glee, Party Down), Brian Posehn (The Sarah Silverman Programme), Danny Trejo (Machete), John Cho (Hardold And Kumar, Go On), Jim Rash (Community), John Krasinski (The Office), and Roscoe Lee Browne all pop up from time to time.
It is a light-hearted, feel-good film without any real sense of peril (unless of course, you too are as high as a kite) and the plot is as pointless as it can be, but that is part of the charm.
